Aiken's extraordinary "tunnel of trees," on South Boundary has won the 2005 Heritage Tree Award from the South Carolina Urban and Community Forestry Council.
The announcement letter from R. Daniel Burbage, Chairman of the Heritage Tree Committee reads, "The City of Aiken is to be commended for its recognition of such a valuable community asset and for its stewardship of that asset." A bronze plaque honoring the City and these trees is being cast and will be presented soon.
Reputed to have been planted in 1877, this allee of 122 oaks borders roughly one mile of this major roadway, providing a striking canopy shading South Boundary. At least 22 of these great oaks have trunks that are over four feet in diameter and a few span almost seven feet.
