Instructional Recreational Programs

All instructional programs require pre-registration and payment is due at the time of registration. Those not residing inside the Aiken city limits must add $20 (ages 18 and under) or $25 (ages 19 & older) to the class or session cost. Memberships are available to those living outside the Aiken city limits at a rate of: Individual - $ 75 per year or Family - $ 125 per year.  Upon purchase members will receive City rates on class and programs. Memberships are not applicable to rental fees.

 

After School Program (Smith-Hazel Recreation Center)
Monday - Friday 2:30pm / 5pm : August 17, 2009 - May 29, 2010 with a light snack daily
Ages 5-13 : Cost: $20 weekly for 1st child and $5 discount for 2nd or more children : Membership is available for out-of-city residents. Please note that payment is due before program starts each week.

Adult Flag Football
Flag Football league played October and November. Age: 18 and up Organizational meeting at Citizens Park II: August 28, 6:00 p.m. Registration: Team rosters and fees due September 25
League Play Begins: October 12 Citizens Park II Call 642-7761 for more information.

Ballroom Dance
Learn to dance like a star! The instructor will teach beginner and advanced steps.  Partners are required. Age: 12 and up (those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) Cost: $45 per couple / non-resident fees apply | Wednesdays, October 21 - November 18, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.| Weeks Center, Rooms 1 & 2.

Basic Dog Training
The Basic Dog Training class is for dogs who are five months old or older.  This class runs for six weeks.  Your dog will learn the basic commands of come, sit, down, stay, wait, stand, etc.  Topics will include basic care of dogs and what to expect as the training progresses.  Dogs must be registered with the City if residing within the City of Aiken, and you must provide a copy of your dog's rabies certificate. Ages: all, Cost: $65 per session / non-resident fees apply, Tuesdays: October 13 - November 17, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Weeks Center, Room 1&2.

Beginner Line Dance
Take this 5-week introductory course and you’ll learn all the right moves!  In this low paced class you will dance various country and modern line dance. This class will help you to transition into our monthly line dance class.  Age: 16 and up Cost: $30 per person / Non-resident fees apply

BINGO for Seniors
Join in for an exciting game of Bingo! 9 games are played, with up to 2 winners per game. Prizes are $3 gift cards to various stores.  Age: 50 and up, Cost: $1 for 2 cards, $2 for 4 cards, $3 for 6 cards, Monthly: Tuesdays, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., Weeks Center, Room 4.

Birthday Parties at the Weeks Ceramic Center
Rent the Ceramics Center for your child’s next Birthday Party! The ceramics instructor will help the kids paint a pre-chosen ceramic piece.  There are a variety of choices for kids of all ages. Age: All, Cost: Varies, Weeks Ceramics Center.

Breakfast with Santa
Santa is very busy, but he's taking time out to visit Aiken.  He's stopping by to have breakfast with the children and to listen to their holiday wishes.  After breakfast the children can make a holiday craft to take home.  Pre-registration is required. Registration ends December 6.  Age: 12 and under (accompanied by an adult).  Cost: $2 per child.  Saturday, December 19, 8:30 am.  Weeks Center, Gym 1.

Card Clubs
Pinochle: Tuesdays, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm | Canasta: Tuesdays, 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm | Bridge: Fridays, 11:30 pm – 3:30 pm ($1 fee); Weeks Center.

Ceramics Center OPEN HOUSE
Stop by the Ceramics Center during open house to meet the instructor, Theressa Serrato.  Learn about upcoming classes and workshops, or take home some information about a Ceramics Party.  Come and see the variety of ceramic pieces you can create! Light refreshments will be served.  Saturday, August 29, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.  Weeks Ceramics Center.

Ceramics
The Ceramics Center offers participants the opportunity to create, paint, glaze and fire a variety of objects including dishes, vases, seasonal decorations and more.  Fees include one class per week and students may choose from one of the options listed below.  Class may last up to 3 hours depending on your skill level and what stage you are working on with your pieces.  Age: 18 and up | Cost: $200 per year (Sept. – May)|
$140 for ½ year (Sept. – Dec. or Jan. – May) / non-resident fees apply |$70 per month / non-resident fees apply

Children’s Jumping Gymnastics
Recreational and Level 1 Gymnastics; perfect for beginners!  Perform mat routines, balance beam, and mini trampoline. Age: 5 - 12, Cost: $35 per month / non-resident fees apply, Monthly: Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Weeks Center, Room 6&7.

Climbing Wall
City of Aiken PRT invites you to participate in Rock Climbing on our 1,200 square foot climbing facility, located near the Carolina Bay off Price Avenue.  Our staff is fully trained and will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.  Climbing routes have been designed for beginner and experienced climbers.  Join our drop-in climbing sessions. Age: 3 and up. Cost: $5 per visit or $20 for a 5-visit pass (Aiken City Residents / Recreation Members); $8 per visit or $25 for a 5-visit pass (Non-City Reisdents / Non-Members).  Monthly: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:00 - 6:00 pm

Evening Fitness
In this class you will do one session of aerobic weight lifting/core strengthening and one session of aerobics/resistance training. Aerobics are a mixture of step and hi/lo floor. Age: 12 and up (those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) Cost: $20 for 8 tickets / non-resident fees apply. Monthly: Mondays & Thursdays, 7:15– 8:30pm, Weeks Center, Room 6 & 7, Call 642-7631 for more information.

Family Archery Class
This 5-week program is for beginner archers of all ages! Participants will learn archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement. Students shoot at bullseye targets placed before an arrow resistant net in the gymnasium. Equipment used is state-of-art and designed to fit every student. Class is designed for kids and their parents to attend together. Individual adults may also participate.  Family archery class can accommodate up to 20 participants. *Note: the first class is a classroom setting in which you will learn information about the program and safety issues.  The next four classes will consist of actual archery shooting. Fit 4 Ever
This low impact, moderate paced fitness class is great for a total body workout! Enjoy aerobics, resistance exercises with light weights, and floor exercises all set to fun, upbeat music. Age: 16 and up, Cost: $26 for 10tickets (good for anytime) / non-resident fees apply, Free for SilverSneakers® Swipe Card Members, Monthly: M, W, Th, F, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., Weeks Center, Room 6&7.

Fitness Room
The Weeks Center Fitness Room is equipped with Treadmills, an Elliptical Machine, Recumbent Bikes, Cybex Machine, Biceps Curl Machine, Leg Press Machine, Free Weights, and many other weight station machines. Age: 16 and up (teens age 16 & 17 must be accompanied by an adult) ,Cost: $15 per month; Membership Required, Monday – Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 8:45 p.m. / Saturday, 9:15 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. / Sunday, 1:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m., Weeks Fitness Room.

Fitness Room Equipment Orientation
Learn how to safely use and make adjustments on the fitness room equipment based on your fitness needs and level.  This is a one time session offered to fitness room members only. You must pre-register to attend the orientation.  Sign up at the Weeks Center Front Desk. Ages: 18 and up, Cost: Free, First First Saturday of the month, 9:00—10:00 am, Weeks Fitness Room

Kids Marathon
This 2-month running program offers elementary-aged children a chance to be a real marathon runner. Those participating will track their miles on a log sheet. They’ll run 1 mile per day up to 5 miles per week, totaling 25 miles over two months. A grand finale “Fun Run” will be held at the Weeks Center Track and will be 1.2 miles completing the 26.2 mile marathon. Kids will receive a t-shirt, race number, and finishers medal just like a real marathoner. Please pre-register for this event so you can receive your log sheet and other important information! Line Dance
In this moderately paced class, you will learn country line dances as well as those taught to jazz, big band and modern music.  Age: 16 and up, Cost: $30 for 10 tickets (good for anytime) / non-resident fees apply | Monthly: Tuesdays, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., Weeks Center, Room 6&7.

Personal Training
Schedule a Personal Trainer for a one-on-one individualized fitness session in the Fitness Room.  Our Certified Personal Trainers areavailable to help you meet your fitness goals.  Your session will include a fitness assessment to establish your level of fitness complete with a written program/training schedule.  Each session is one hour.  Multiple sessions must be paid for in full at time of registration. Ages: All (additional guidelines apply for those under 18), Cost: $50 per hour / 10 sessions: $39 per  hour / 20 sessions: $35 per hours.  Non-Resident fees apply plus normal fitness room member fees. Puppy Class
Instructor Patricia Czaikowski, member of APDT, will hold a six-week course of instruction for puppies ten weeks to twenty weeks of age.  The puppy class is designed to provide owners with information on how to handle a new puppy.  Puppies will learn a variety of skills and commands and will take the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test at the end of the course. Puppies must have record of 2 sets of shots.  Age: all, Cost: $65 per session / non-resident fees apply, Tuesdays: October 13 - November 17, 5:30 – 6:30 pm, Weeks Center, Room 1&2.

Quick Start Tennis
Quick Start (also known as Pee Wee) Tennis is a great way to introduce children to sports. Smaller courts, smaller nets, smaller racquets and soft tennis balls create a suitable environment

Recreation Ramblers Walking Club
Join this free club and earn rewards for the miles you walk! You can join anytime! Enjoy free fitness seminars throughout the year and receive a club newsletter. We’ll end the year with a Recreation Ramblers Awards Party! Sign up at the front desk at the Weeks Center. Ages: 18 and up, Cost: Free; Join anytime!, Weeks Center Walking Track.

Senior Adult Day Trips

SilverSneakers® Fitness Program (Muscular Strength and Range of Movement)
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support. Age: 50 and up, Cost: $26 for 10 tickets (good anytime) / non-resident fees apply *Free for participating Medicare health plan members. Yoga Stretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity. Age: 50 and up. Cost: $26 for 10 tickets (can be used on all SilverSneakers classes) / non-resident fees apply. *Free for participating Medicare health plan members. Soccer Skills
This class teaches young players the skills and rules of soccer.  It is a non-competitive environment and children are encouraged to progress gradually.  Children must be the appropriate age by the first class date.  This class fills up fast so register early! Storytime in the Gardens
Join us this fall as local senior adults read aloud stories from children’s books. Each
child in attendance receives a free book to take home. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on.

Storytime with Mrs. Claus
Mrs. Claus is making a special trip to Aiken!  She'll be reading holiday books to good little boys and girls; and she will give away a free book to every child in attendance.  Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be given away.  Ages 8 and under (accompanied by an adult). Cost: Free.  Tuesday, December 15, 4:00 pm.  Weeks Center, Rooms 1&2.

Teeny Weenie Athletes
In this parent/child class, your little athlete will learn a variety of sport skills! Parents are expected to participate. This class fills up fast so register early! Age: 3 - 5 (accompanied by an adult)

Thanksgiving Storytime
Listen to stories about Thanksgiving and Turkeys!  There will be door prizes and light refreshments. Each child will be given a free book to take home. Ages 8 and under (accompanied by an adult).  Cost: Free.  Tuesday, November 24, 4:00 pm.  Weeks Center, Rooms 1&2.

Toddler Time
Use the gym space to run, chase and release a lot of energy!  This program allows for kids to interact with others of the same age, and gives parents a chance to socialize with one another.  Equipment and toys such as balls, scooters, mats, hoola-hoops, parachutes and more will be provided to stimulate free play.  Personal toys are welcomed.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. Sibling policy: Only enrolled participants ages 5 and under may participate in the activity.  Infants in strollers who are not yet walking are welcome to attend. Siblings older than 5 may be present but must stay seated on the bleachers at all times. Age: 5 and under (accompanied by an adult), Cost: $2 per visit, per child, OR $15 for a 10-visit pass; Mondays and Wednesdays,  9:30 – 11:30 a.m., Weeks Center, Gym 2.

Walking & Music Exercise Class
A total work out for muscle toning, strength and fun attend this class at the Smith-Hazel Center beginning on Monday, January 23, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.  The class is for those ages 16 and up.  The cost is $15 per month and and non-resident fees apply.   The first class is free.

Yoga I & II
In this gentle mind/body workout you will strengthen and tone your body, improve your balance and flexibility, and calm your mind.  Traditional yoga poses combined with soothing music will give your day a whole new focus.  The first Tuesday of the month will introduce basic poses.  The Friday class will offer several more challenging options. Participants may attend both Yoga I & II classes. The class is for those ages 18 and older and the cost is $ 35 for 10 coupons (good anytime) and non-resident fees apply.  The class will be held at the Weeks Center from 8:45 – 9:45 am.. Yoga I meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Yoga II meets on Friday.

Youth Archery League
The Youth Archery Leage will begin training in January 2010 to prepare for the State Tournament that will be held in late March 2010.  Dates/Times/Costs: TBA
