Neighborhood & Housing Services
Aiken continues to grow. While we are enjoying this new growth, we must ensure that our existing neighborhoods continue to receive vital services. The Neighborhood Coordinator works with existing and emerging neighborhood associations to help them formulate plans to strengthen their neighborhoods.
As a HUD Entitlement City, the City of Aiken administers CDBG funds from the Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Currently the City also receives HOME funds from HUD.
The City of Aiken community development programs are involved in more than just housing. This department helps provide funding for streetscape improvements, infrastructure, renewal of neighbor-hood parks and home emergency repair.
Housing assistance is available for income-qualified residents through Neighborhood and Development Services Division. The City offers an extensive housing program in Aiken, with low-interest loans and grants for assistance with emergency housing repairs, and periodically provides additional services to assist with home ownership for qualified residents. The City is also developing new housing in targeted areas of the City, and has partnered with Habitat for Humanity and with area developers to provide affordable housing in Aiken. Aiken Corporation offers incentives to encourage the renovation and construction of second floor housing in the downtown area. For homeowner assistance, please call the Neighborhood and Development Services Division. If you would like to know more about the incentives for housing construction and other downtown development, please call the City Manager’s Office.
The Housing Authority operates as an independent unit of the City, with Board members appointed by the Aiken City Council. The Authority owns and manages assisted housing for low and moderate income families, the handicapped and the elderly throughout the Aiken County area.
