April 2024 is National Fair Housing Month Fair Housing – The ‘ACT’ in ACTION! We All Must Make A Move To Make A Change!

The City of Aiken along with the nation, celebrates the 56th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. This landmark law was signed into law on April 11, 1968, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, and family status. The Act furthers the beliefs advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the other heroes of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Honorable Teddy Milner, Mayor for the City of Aiken, signed a Proclamation acknowledging April 2024 marks the 56th Anniversary of the passage of the U.S. Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Right Act of 1968.

The City of Aiken ensures that it does business in accordance with the Federal Fair Housing Law. We have made great strides through the years in opening the housing market in giving our citizens an equal opportunity to live wherever they choose. Choosing where you live is a right and you have a Voice to make a change. Housing discrimination is wrong. If you feel you have experienced housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identification), disability, and family status, do not be afraid to Make a Move and call the HUD Hotline 1-800-669-9777 (voice), 1-800-877-8339 (Federal Relay), online at

Throughout Fair Housing Month, HUD and its partners will host activities that enhance public awareness of fair housing rights, highlight fair housing enforcement efforts, and emphasize the importance of addressing housing discrimination in all its forms.
We hope you will join us this month to recognize efforts taking place to achieve housing justice for all who call America home.
