City of Aiken Department of Parks and Recreation Invites Community to
Generations Park Grand Opening
Summer is here, which means it’s time to get out and discover the great things happening at your local parks and recreation facilities. This July, the City of Aiken is celebrating Park and Recreation Month in a big way. The Department of Parks and Recreation will host the grand opening of Generations Park, located on Columbia Highway North. The grand opening, 9:00 a.m. – Noon on Saturday, July 14th, will feature the annual Touch-A-Truck event, live entertainment, and water slides, with an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. There is no fee to attend this community event. Concessions will be available for purchase.
Citizens in attendance will see the completion of phase one of the park. Phase one features an amphitheater, playground, picnic shelter, walking trail, and green space for outdoor play. The Extreme Generation playground equipment is the first of its kind in South Carolina. It encourages creative play with rope-course-inspired elements, sky-scraper like towers that are nearly 30 feet tall, unique roof designs, colors, and many different climbers, slides, and decks.
In commemoration of the grand opening and National Park and Recreation Month, the Department of Parks and Recreation will host the Generations Park Adventure, a scavenger hunt held June 25 – July 14. Youth can pick up adventure packets from Odell Weeks and Smith-Hazel Recreation Centers. They can also be downloaded from Facebook at www.facebook.com/AikenParksRec.
The Generations Park Adventure encourages families to explore many City parks and playgrounds, leading up to the grand opening event. To be eligible to win one of the many prizes, participants will have to submit their answer forms in person on July 14th. Clues and special prizes will be announced on the Department’s social media outlets throughout the adventure. Adventurers are encouraged to check Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for these extras. All media outlets use the handle @AikenParksRec.
Adventurers who use the hashtag #GenerationsParkAdventure when sharing their own photos will receive bonus entries in the on-site prize drawings. Citizens are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
