City of Aiken Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department Announces
Free Swimming Lessons through Partnership with Aiken Personnel Services

Aiken, SC – Just in time for National Water Safety Month, and through a partnership with Aiken Personnel Services (APS), the City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) Department announces an opportunity to promote safe swimming this summer. Swimming lessons will be offered free of charge at the Public Pool at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center. APS has generously donated funding to provide lessons for up to 30 toddlers, children, and adults, in which the City is matching, for a total of 60 free lessons. Children and adults with special needs are welcome and encouraged to participate. Registration is open now and can be done in person at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center. The first session of swimming lessons begins on June 7 and will continue throughout the summer.

Registration is now full. All slots for free swimming lessons have been filled. However, we are still accepting students for the wait list. To be added to the wait list, registration can be done in person at the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center.

The goal of this partnership is not only to facilitate lessons and create 60 strong swimmers, but to build awareness about the fundamental importance of teaching children and adults to swim to prevent drowning.  Learning to swim leads to safe water outings and fun summers with friends.

May is National Water Safety Month and on May 15, the City of Aiken PRT will join thousands of other agencies to celebrate International Water Safety Day.

“APS is committed to safety. Whether it’d be in the workplace, in the community, or in the water we want people to be safe at work and at play. The recent incident at Clarks Hill hit home because those guys were my age. This partnership to offer free swimming lessons is the best way for us to do something meaningful and impactful. This training will save lives down the road, and we highly recommend the community participate because you never know when you may need it.” Dexter Price, APS.
