City of Aiken Fills Two Key Positions
AIKEN, SC – Aiken City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh announces that two key staff positions in the city: Director of Information Technology and City Engineer, have been filled.
Robert Popenhagen was selected as the Information Technology Director. Popenhagen, formally a Network Administrator with a strong background in cybersecurity, has worked in the city’s Information Technology Department for the past 17 years.
In his spare time, Popenhagen teaches a class on computer security at Aiken Technical College. He treasures his wife, Janet, and two girls, Savannah and Amanda. Amateur beekeeping and gardening are two of his pastime hobbies.
Thomas Parrott, a Civil Engineer, has been hired as our new City Engineer. Parrot is an Aiken resident and has worked in Cranston Engineering’s Augusta office for his entire 8-year professional career as a civil engineer. His areas of focus in engineering are water and sewer, utilities, stormwater, design, and planning.
He has recently worked as a consultant with a local engineering firm as project manager on municipal civil projects for Aiken, Augusta, and Columbia County. He is active in local professional organizations and was one of the project leaders of the Leadership Aiken County class of 2016-2017 for the Cottage at Nurture Home on Greenville Street.
Parrott is from Lexington, South Carolina, and now lives in Aiken with his wife, a native Aikenite, Meredith, and their children.
Parrott enjoys spending time with his family while exploring Hitchcock Woods, discovering downtown Aiken, or woodworking in his free time. He is looking forward to working in Aiken, the town he now calls home.
