Smith-Hazel Recreation Center & Park Improvements

The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is thrilled to unveil a comprehensive set of improvements to the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center, enhancing the recreational experience for residents and visitors alike. These enhancements are made possible through strategic funding allocations from various sources.

Funding for Center improvements provided by Capital Project Sales Tax (CPST) IV and South Carolina
Department of Aging Permanent Improvement Project (PIP) Grant.

Funding for Park improvements provided by Capital Project Sales Tax (CPST) IV, Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Grant, and Parks And Recreation Development (PARD) Grant.

Key highlights of the Smith-Hazel Recreation Center improvements include:

  • Indoor Basketball Court: New hardwood surfacing of gym floor and upgraded gym amenities.
  • Restroom Upgrades & Accessibility Improvements: Renovation and design upgrades of facility restrooms, doors, and reception desk for ADA Accessibility.
  • Walking Track and Shelter: New surfacing and routing of a 1/4 mile trail; addition of a picnic shelter. The existing shelter will remain within the park.
  • Fitness Room & Program Space: Community fitness and senior adult programming activity rooms.
  • Tennis Courts: Two tennis courts, fenced and accessible by sidewalks. Existing courts will be demolished.
  • Playground: New playground equipment will include slides, climbing elements, swings, and artificial turf surfacing. The existing playground will be demolished.
  • Basketball Courts: Two outdoor basketball courts, fenced and accessible by sidewalks. The existing court will close.

The center and park area will be closed from December 2023 through May 2024 for construction.
