Aiken, SC – The City of Aiken is announcing the arrival of three new automated side loaders to pick up solid waste from residents. The new vehicles will be delivered on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

“We are excited about this addition to our fleet. These new trucks will allow us to increase both safety and efficiency, which is great for our employees and citizens” said Lex Kirkland, City of Aiken Public Services Director.

The new trucks are New Way Roto Pacs. The automated side loaders will allow the City to pick up solid waste utilizing only a driver while eliminating the risk to employees working at the rear of the trucks. With the purchase of the new trucks, the City of Aiken’s automated fleet is now up to four trucks.

The City will utilize the existing roll carts. However, Public Services is requesting significant cooperation in roll cart placement to help with efficiency. This will be a change for all citizens who are currently being serviced by the classic rear load style trucks. The City is requesting that all roll carts now be placed at the edge of the street with the handle facing the resident’s home. All roll carts need to be out by 7 AM with 3 feet of clearance from all other objects, including other roll carts.

“This equipment was carefully considered after much review and discussion with City staff and other jurisdictions. We are ready to see these trucks out in our City,” stated Aiken City Manager Stuart T. Bedenbaugh. The purchase of the automated side loader trucks was approved by City Council as part of the 2019-2020 budget.
