The City of Aiken Engineering and Utilities Water Treatment Plant has received The Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) award for successfully achieving and in some areas exceeding the optimization performance goals of the AWOP for the year 2017.
The Water Treatment Plant also received recognition for successfully earning the award for 15 years since the origin of AWOP in 2002.
The goal of the AWOP is to reduce the potential for bacteria in the water supply by meeting exceptional treatment criteria and producing water that meets a higher standard and objectives such as:
- Improved Treatment Plant Performance and Public Health Protection
- Effective Compliance Assistance for Small (and Large) Water Systems
- Enhanced State Staff and Water System Staff Capability and Morale
- Effective Use of State Resources
The award was presented on December 5 by The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) which sponsors this program that supports utilities in improving disinfection and particle removal for the benefit of public health.
