FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aiken, SC – The SC Joint Bond Review Committee has accepted the allocation of $20 million in plutonium settlement funds toward the construction of a mixed-use facility in downtown Aiken.

This significant milestone marks a crucial step in delivering on the Governor’s recommendation of having a space to develop workforce training programs designed to fill engineering, science, research, and management positions for the Savannah River National Laboratory.

“We thank the Governor and the South Carolina General Assembly for moving this important proposal for the construction of mixed-use facility forward.” Said Aiken Mayor Rick N. Osbon. “We are especially grateful to the Aiken County legislative delegation for their continued support of this exciting initiative.”

This funding allocation gives the City of Aiken the responsibility to build the facility. The goal is to create a facility that delivers on the Governor’s recommendation, benefits the community, and supports the City’s unique character. Discussions are underway to develop a plan that will be shared with residents in the near future.
