AIKEN, SC — The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, in conjunction with the Senior Commission, will host a free event, Smart Steps: How to Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls on Thursday, May 16 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Lessie B. Price Senior & Youth Center, 841 Edgefield Avenue NW. The mission of the Senior Commission is to facilitate programming to advance the well-being of seniors (age 50 and above) in Aiken.
This event will allow attendees to connect with wellness experts, learn how to improve balance, as well as create new neural pathways in the brain to improve functions that typically deteriorate as we age. Over ten different local businesses are sponsoring the event including Bath Fitter, DayBreak, Chandler Law Firm, Family Pharmacy, Gentiva Hospice, Hearing Associates of South Carolina, Hospital Auxiliary of Aiken County, Shellhouse Funeral Home and Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, and TGBG Marketing, Inc. There will be booths offering a wide variety of services, programs, and support for participants to learn about.
The keynote speaker will be Kelly Tunison PT, DPT at Aiken Regional Medical Center’s Hitchcock Outpatient Rehabilitation Center who will give a talk on Balance Systems and Fall Prevention. Also presenting will be Carol Gerson, creator of Ageless Grace: Brain & Body Fitness, who will conduct a seated core fitness class coupled with upbeat, age-appropriate music.
With both speakers, “the Senior Commission hopes to offer participants valuable resources and real-life effective techniques to improve balance, reduce the risk of falls and increase bone density,” says Aimee Hanna, chairperson for Senior Commission.
Registration for this event is required. Participants can register by calling the Lessie B. Price Aiken Senior & Youth Center at (803) 643-2181. The event is free. It is first come, first served for the first 100 people. A light breakfast with coffee will be served to participants.
The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism invites people of all ability levels to enjoy programs, parks, and facilities. Individuals needing special assistance to participate should notify PRT Administrative Office 48 hours in advance.
