Aiken, SC– The City of Aiken will host a public meeting to provide information on the Shaws Creek Water Treatment Plant currently in design. The meeting will be held from 12:00-2:00 PM on September 27, 2023 in Room 315 of the City of Aiken Municipal Building located at 111 Chesterfield Street South. The format of the meeting will be a drop-in open house, with design and engineering staff available to take questions for the duration. This meeting is being held pursuant to public participation requirements for the State Revolving Fund.
Representatives of the project design team will be available to discuss the need for the project, alternatives evaluated, project rationale, and environmental and financial impacts. The project features the construction of a new water treatment plant to replace the existing plant which has been in operation for almost seven decades and has reached the end of its service life. The proposed plan will see the construction of a new plant across the road (Hwy 1) from the existing plant, which provides over 25% of the clean drinking water to the City of Aiken.
The new facility will have an 8 MGD capacity. The intake structure and low head dam will be rehabilitated. A raw water line will be constructed to convey 8 MGD from the raw water intake to the water treatment plant. The new water treatment plant will feature physiochemical processes to provide high quality potable water, meeting primary drinking water standards and all regulations set forth by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
