Aiken Unveils TextMyGov: Enhancing Communications with Text Messaging

Friday, September 1, 2023

The City of Aiken announces the unveiling of TextMyGov, a texting platform that enhances communication and engagement between the city government and its residents. TextMyGov offers a simple and convenient way for residents to connect with the City of Aiken using keywords and key phrases in text messaging. TextMyGov also offers citizens the opportunity to opt-in to select lists to receive information via their cell phone.

TextMyGov introduces a new era of instant and personalized communication, empowering residents to actively participate in local government affairs. By texting specific keywords or key phrases related to their interests, such as “Athletics” or “Parks,” residents can access the information and resources they need quickly and outside of traditional business hours.

“The introduction of this platform provides another valuable communication tool for our City and our community. It allows residents to conveniently connect with City departments, access information, and explore City offerings.” expressed Gary Meadows, City of Aiken Media Coordinator

In addition to residents submitting queries, TextMyGov will provide real-time updates, informing residents about important announcements by opting into an established City text list. For example, citizens can text AIKENRAINALERT (to receive rain alerts), AIKENROADCLOSURE (to receive road closure notices) or AIKENTRASH (to receive trash notices) to 91896 to be signed up for those notifications.

“Acquiring this texting platform demonstrates the City’s commitment to enhancing communications with our citizens. It encourages residents of all ages to engage with their municipal government and helps us build a more vibrant and inclusive community,” stated City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh.

Aiken residents can start utilizing TextMyGov immediately by texting their interests or questions to 803-989-7779. It is important to note that this system only recognizes keywords and phrases; for best results, do not send lengthy questions or statements.
